Why Colorado Springs Trusts Checkmate With the Heavy Stuff

A piano crew that learned the Pikes Peak grades and dry-altitude rules the hard way, here in Colorado Springs.

Grands, Organs & Heavy Pieces

Concert grands at the Broadmoor, uprights in Old North End parlors, and pipe and electronic organs for Front Range churches all get skidded, padded, and crated by our own trained piano crew — the part of the job most El Paso County and the Pikes Peak region movers would rather skip.

Top-Rated CO Crews

Our movers are full-time W-2 Checkmate employees, background-checked and drilled on everything from a 900-pound concert grand to a full split-level household — we never staff a job with day labor. That's how we hold a 5-star rating on Google and Yelp.

Transparent, Honest Pricing

No hidden fees, no driveway surprises. Clear flat-rate quotes in writing for local Colorado Springs moves, a set piano price by instrument, and binding written estimates for every long-distance relocation.

No Brokers, No Subcontractors

The truck in your driveway is ours and the crew draws a Checkmate paycheck. Your move is never posted to a load board or handed to a stranger in a rented van — one company, start to finish.

Fully Insured, $1M Cargo

Licensed for Colorado intrastate moves as PUC  and interstate under our own US DOT 3402518 / MC 1102873 authority, with $1 million in cargo coverage on every single job.

On Time, Even in Snow

A two-hour arrival window and a call when the truck leaves the yard. We plan around Monument Hill ice and the mountain grades so your closing date, your elevator reservation, and your move-out deadline still hold.

Packing & Supplies Included

Full or partial packing, with every material we need loaded before we leave the yard — pads, shrink wrap, piano boards, dollies, and cartons — so the Checkmate crew starts working the second we knock.

Specialty Moves Handled

Pianos, gun safes, antiques, and oversized pieces moved with the right boards, straps, and a crew chief who has walked a baby grand up a Cheyenne Mountain switchback driveway before.

Free Estimate in 1 Hour

Tell us about your piano or your whole house and a real person at our Colorado Springs office sends a flat-rate written quote back — usually within one business hour, no obligation.

Long-Distance Moving in Colorado Springs

Long-Distance Moving

Leaving the Front Range for Denver, Pueblo, Albuquerque, Phoenix, or Dallas? Whoever pads and wraps your Colorado Springs home is who drives it and sets the cartons down at the destination, the entire trip priced as one binding figure. Your job never hits a freight board, no middleman skims the bill, and a grand rides with the very crew that crated it.

Residential Moving in Colorado Springs

Residential Moving

We move houses right across the Pikes Peak region, be it a Rockrimmon tri-level with a basement haul or a Cheyenne Mountain place perched on a grade. Door frames and floors get padded, beds and oversized furniture come apart and go back together at the far address, and on a snowy day the load stays strapped tight for the Monument Hill descent on I-25.

Apartment & Condo Moving in Colorado Springs

Apartment & Condo Moving

Condos, lofts, and apartment buildings from the downtown Olympic Museum district out to UCCS, including the ones with a single skinny stairwell or an elevator slot you have to book and hit. Devon reserves the freight car and the loading zone in advance, floor runners go down through the lobby, and a third-floor move still wraps up inside its window.

Full Packing in Colorado Springs

Full Packing

Turn the entire house over to Trent's packers, or just the rooms you would rather not face, and the kitchen, the stemware, and the framed art come out boxed double and labeled per room. Anything our hands wrap is insured to the same level as the heavy pieces on the load, and the cartons, paper, and tape arrive with the crew so nobody is running to the store the night before.

Short-Term Storage in Colorado Springs

Short-Term Storage

Closing dates around the Springs almost never sync up, so for the gap we tuck your household into a clean, climate-controlled unit, a real plus in this thin mountain air, and redeliver it on your say-so. Figure roughly $110 to $260 a month by unit size, set down in writing alongside the estimate rather than sprung on you as a second bill.

Piano Moving in Colorado Springs

Piano Moving

This is what Checkmate was built on. Concert grands, baby grands, uprights, consoles, spinets, player pianos, and church and electronic organs, skidded on the board, padded, and crated by our own trained piano crew, never a general mover guessing. Gideon has eased more than one grand down the Broadmoor stairs without a mark, and because the Front Range air is so dry, we talk you through humidity and acclimation so the instrument settles right at the new room. Uprights run about $280 to $450, baby grands $500 to $800, concert grands $750 to $1,300, and organs $350 to $650.

Loading & Unloading in Colorado Springs

Loading & Unloading

Rented your own truck, or have a pod or container sitting in the driveway? Book our crew by the hour to load it tight or unload it quick, your furniture and boxes getting the same trained hands a full move would, the upright included if you have one. Useful when you are driving yourself to Denver or Pueblo and just need the heavy, awkward pieces handled by people who do it for a living.

What Our Colorado Springs Customers Say

Our 5-star reputation comes from Pikes Peak families — and a lot of well-loved pianos — we've moved since 2010.

“We had a baby grand to bring down from the upper level of our Broadmoor place along with a full 2-bed, and Gideon's crew handled the piano beautifully, skid board, straps, the whole routine, not a scratch on the case or the stair rail. Where I'd hold back the fifth star: scheduling was a little loose, they landed closer to the back of the morning window than the front, so we lost an hour standing around. Once they got going the work was first-rate and the written price never moved.”

“Needed our upright moved from an Old Colorado City rental into a cottage up in Manitou, narrow porch steps on both ends. I called three movers and Checkmate was the only one who talked about a skid board and humidity instead of just 'yeah we can grab that.' Two guys, padded it, walked it down the stoop slow, and tucked it into the new front room. Worth every dollar to know the piano was in real piano hands.”

“Our Manitou Springs place is on one of those streets where a big truck barely fits, and the crew handled it like they'd done it a hundred times. They wrapped the furniture, took the old narrow staircase a piece at a time, and rebuilt both beds at the new house. Nathan had quoted a flat number after walking through, and that was exactly what I paid at the end, no creep. Genuinely good people.”

“Small studio over in Briargate, and honestly I felt a bit silly booking a piano-specialist crew for something that fit in one room. They gave it full attention regardless. A pair of movers had me loaded and settled into the new spot in under three hours, careful with my turntable and bike, and the flat rate came in honest with nothing added at the close. Smooth from beginning to end.”

A Note From Nathan

“I ran the delivery floor for a Colorado Springs piano dealer for years, walking grands into Broadmoor estates and uprights up tri-level stairs, before I started Checkmate Piano Movers in 2010. I'd seen instruments worth more than a car bounced around by movers who'd never touched a skid board, and Fort Carson families lowballed on the phone then gouged at the truck. So I built a crew that moves pianos and organs right and brings that same planning to the whole house — our trucks, our people, a written flat rate. The name is a chess nod: every move planned to the last step.”

Colorado Springs Moving & Piano Questions, Answered

The things people ask Nathan's crew most before booking a move.

Are you really the movers, or a broker?
Yes — Checkmate Piano Movers is a fully licensed and insured local moving company based in Colorado Springs, CO, started by Nathan Roark in 2010. We run our own trucks, our own piano crew, and our own household crews on every job, with Colorado PUC and our own US DOT/MC authority on file — never a broker, matching service, or lead app.
What does a local Colorado Springs move cost?
A 2-mover crew starts at $130/hour with the truck, pads, and equipment thrown in; add a third mover at $175 or a fourth at $230 when a split-level or a piano calls for it. Most 1–2 bedroom jobs land in the 2–4 hour range. Once Nathan has walked the job or seen it on video, we can put that in writing as one set flat figure if you'd rather know the total up front. Anything leaving Colorado is priced as a binding written quote.
How far ahead should I book Checkmate?
Aim for two to three weeks on weekend or end-of-month dates. Summer fills up fastest, when Fort Carson, Peterson, and Academy PCS orders all hit at once, so book those early. Weekdays and the middle of the month stay open longer, and any time a crew has a gap we'll happily take a last-minute or same-day job.
Do you move pianos, and where do you serve?
Pianos are our specialty — uprights, baby grands, concert grands, and church organs, skidded and crated by our own crew. We cover local moves around Colorado Springs and El Paso County and the Pikes Peak region, intrastate Colorado, and long-distance from Colorado Springs to anywhere in the country, with gun safes and antiques handled in-house too.
